Research and Innovations Actions

The Research and Innovations Actions (RIA) are one of the key features of Horizon 2020 and come with their own set of provisions and funding rates.
Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) primarily consist of activities aiming to establish new knowledge and/or to explore the feasibility of a new or improved technology, product, process, service or solution.

For this purpose, Horizon 2020 includes basic and applied research, technology development and integration, testing and validation on a small-scale prototype in a laboratory or simulated environment. Horizon 2020 projects may contain closely connected but limited demonstration or pilot activities aiming to show technical feasibility in a near to operational environment. Funding for these types of activities is typically 100%.

Budget H2020

The EU framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 is the European Grant and subsidy framework for innovation and R&D. The programme, running from 2014 to 2020, has a budget of  €70 billion and aims to secure Europe’s global competitiveness.

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions focus on training and career development of researchers. Innovative Training Networks (ITN) are set up to train a new generation of creative, entrepreneurial and innovative early stage researchers.

Innovative Training Networks: training a new generation

The actions provide grants at all stages of researchers' careers, and encourage mobility across nations, sectors and disciplines. Innovative Training Networks (ITN) are set up to train a new generation of creative, entrepreneurial and innovative early stage researchers.Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions focus on training and career development of researchers. 

Types of ITNs

There are three types of ITNs:

  • ITN-ETN: European Training Networks (ETNs) produce highly-skilled researchers and stimulate entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation in Europe.
  • ITN-EID: European Industrial Doctorates (EIDs) meet the objectives of ITN by involving the non-academic sector in doctoral training.
  • ITN-EJD: European Joint Doctorates (EJDs) promote international, intersectoral and multi/interdisciplinary collaboration, leading to the delivery of joint, double or multiple doctoral degrees.

The Horizon 2020 Future Emerging Technologies programme funds the early stages of joint science and technology research for radically new future technological possibilities.

Future and Emerging Technologies

Future and Emerging Technologies activities help to create in Europe a fertile ground for responsible and dynamic multi-disciplinary collaborations on future and emerging technologies and for kick-starting new European research and innovation eco-systems around them. These will be the seeds for future industrial leadership and for tackling society's grand challenges in new ways.

Support of novel and visionary thinking

FET focuses on research beyond what is known, accepted or widely adopted and supports novel and visionary thinking to open promising paths towards radically new technological possibilities. In particular, FET funds interdisciplinary collaborations that seek genuine cross-fertilisation and deep synergies between the broadest range of advanced sciences (including the life sciences, social sciences and humanities) and cutting-edge engineering disciplines.

The FET lines of activity

FET has three main lines of activity that together contribute to achieving its mission.

  • FET Open supports the early-stages of the science and technology research and innovation around new ideas towards radically new future technologies. It also funds coordination and support activities for such high-risk forward looking research to prosper in Europe.
  • FET Proactive addresses promising directions for research on future technologies in order to build up a European critical mass of knowledge and excellence around them.
  • FET Flagships are science-driven, large-scale, multidisciplinary research initiatives oriented towards a unifying goal, aiming at transformational impacts with substantial benefits for European competitiveness and for society.

FET projects need a clear commercialisation and IP strategy to enable the development of new products and services by industry.
