Eurostars: an attractive opportunity for R&D performing SMEs

April 20 2017

September 14 2017 is the deadline for the next round of Eurostars. This European funding opportunity aims to stimulate SMEs to lead international collaborative research and innovation projects.

About the Eurostars grants

The overall goal of the Eurostars is to stimulate growth and development of SMEs in Europe by shortening the time-to-market of new technologies. Eurostars is a funding and support programme, aimed at R&D-performing SMEs that wish to exploit the benefits that come with international collaboration. This call funds proposals with a varying budget per country, but typically between EUR 500k and EUR 1 million.

Typical projects include medical imaging, drug and diagnostic development and drug delivery and ICT.

Collaborations for development of competitive products and services

Companies can benefit from Eurostars funding by setting up collaborations with other companies to develop competitive products and services and benefit from the experience of top-class researchers using the latest state-of-theart equipment in academic institutions. These efforts can thus be supported with non-dilutive funding (and decrease risk).

Conditions for the Eurostars programme

  • Proposals should focus on the development of new products and services.
  • Projects must be started and led by an SME.
  • The consortium leader should be an R&D performing SME from a Eurostars country and the consortium should include at least one other independent participant from another Eurostars country.
  • The duration of an Eurostars project last no longer than three years.
  • The product of research should be ready for market introduction within two years of project completion.

Within a Eurostars project, at least 2 partners from 2 different Eurostars member countries collaborate, of which 1 should be an R&D performing SME.
