How to maximise impact from your ERC grant

September 23 2016

The European Research Council has recently announced the full list of 2016 ERC Starting Grant laureates: 325 early-career researchers will benefit from €485 million in funding. Congratulations! To date, the ERC has funded some 6,500 top researchers at various stages of their careers. Did you know that the ERC offers an additional scheme for ERC grant holders that will enable you to explore the innovation potential of your work?

About the ERC funding schemes

The ERC offers three core funding schemes that are all about scientific quality aiming for excellence;

  • Starting Grant (2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD) deadline 18 Oct 2016
  • Consolidator Grant (7-12 years of experience since completion of PhD) deadline 9 Feb 2017
  • Advanced Grant (significant achievements in the last 10 years) deadline 31 Aug 2017

ERC Proof of Concept grant

In addition, the ERC Proof of Concept (PoC) scheme aims to bridge the gap between research and marketable innovation, where investors are sometimes reluctant to invest in because of this gap

The European Research Council (ERC) launched the new funding initiative in March 2011, open to researchers who have already been awarded an ERC grant (Starting, Consolidator, Advanced or Synergy). The ERC grant holders can apply for this additional funding in order to establish the innovation potential of ideas arising from their ERC-funded frontier research projects. The funding will cover activities at the very early stage of turning research outputs into a commercial or socially valuable proposition, i.e. the initial steps of pre-competitive development.

Conditions for the ERC Proof of Concept subsidy

The ERC PoC funding is made available only to those who already have an ERC awarded to establish proof of concept of an idea that was generated in the course of their ERC-funded projects. The maximum duration of the ERC PoC Grants is up to 18 months and a maximum of €150.000 may be awarded (100% funding). The next deadlines are 4 Oct 2016 and 19 Jan 2016.

How to write an ERC PoC grant application

At ttopstart we aim to empower biomedical researchers and entrepreneurs to establish breakthroughs. In recent years we have been very successful in obtaining ERC PoC applications (90% success rate). Our best practices have been summarised in our article: "How to write a successful ERC Proof of Concept application?"
