Success story: Detecting Breast Cancer with Artificial Intelligence

October 03 2018

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and the second most common cancer overall worldwide. Early detection of breast cancer is a matter of life or death, but it represents a great challenge for clinicians, as abnormalities in mammographic images can be very difficult to detect. ScreenPoint Medical is an ongoing client of ours, who’s mission is to improve early detection of breast cancer through intelligent computer systems. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to highlight ScreenPoint’s important work with a video interview with the CEO Professor Nico Karssemeijer.

Watch our interview with Professor Nico Karssemeijer, CEO of ScreenPoint, to hear more about their work, and what has been a breakthrough in early detection of breast cancer:

Eurostars grant for the Dutch-Danish collaboration

ScreenPoint Medical is a Dutch company based in Nijmegen, which develops Deep Learning and image analysis technology for automated reading of mammograms and digital breast tomosynthesis. They exploit the latest methods in the rapidly evolving field of machine learning, combining these with very large well curated digital image databases. As an extension of their work, they developed project IBSCREEN together with the Danish research-based company Biomediq, who also work with early detection of breast cancer, but from another angle; they have developed automatic, computer-based analysis of mammograms for analysis of future risk of breast cancer. By combining these two technologies, you get a much more personalised way of screening patients for breast cancer, and a much better chance of early detection. This international cooperation was awarded with a Eurostars grant, and it illustrates how much more we can achieve when working together.
