Why patient engagement is crucial in IMI ConcePTION: join the workshop

30 June 2020

At the 9th of July the Innovative Medicine Initiative (IMI) ConcePTION will organize an interactive co-creation workshop for patients. In this blog we share some insights on why we are proud partners of the ConcePTION project and how we are involved.

The unmet problem

Motherhood should not be a fight. To date, however, there is a large uncertainty amongst breastfeeding and pregnant women about the effects of medication as this group is typically excluded from medical research. This makes it very hard for doctors and women to make informed decisions about their treatment. On top of that women take risks but very little happens with the collected data. The ConcePTION project aims to reduce this uncertainty and provide better and faster high-quality safety information by opening up existing data sources across Europe for smarter analyses and meaningful drug information for women. Since this project contributes to our mission to truly transform healthcare and life sciences by accelerating the introduction of impactful innovations, we are very keen to be leading the sustainability efforts of this project.

How we are part of the solution

What does sustainability of a large research consortium mean in practice? Sustainability in this sense involves developing a thriving community with a joint societal and scientific agenda, promoting uptake of the developed tools, methods and infrastructure outside the consortium and endorsement thereof by professional associations, regulators, and pharma. This also requires creating broad awareness of the problems to be addressed and the ConcePTION brand as well as developing financial stability through stable income streams and uniting existing networks.

Our managing director Sietske Zagers on the ConcePTION project:

“At ttopstart we are proud to support ConcePTION. The project’s and our mission are fully aligned which creates great momentum and an effective partnership.”

What’s new and how can you join?

To ensure meaningful drug safety information, patient engagement is crucial. This year, the Patient Engagement Open Forum will take place virtually and IMI ConcePTION is part of the agenda. You can join the session by selecting the session “Motherhood should not be a fight – better safety information on medicines use during pregnancy & breastfeeding, with patients for patients” in the registration form on https://patientengagementopenforum.org/

More about ConcePTION

ConcePTION aims to establish a trusted ecosystem that can efficiently, systematically, and in an ethically responsible manner, generate and disseminate reliable evidence-based information regarding effects of medications used during pregnancy and breastfeeding to women and their healthcare providers. This will be achieved by generating, cataloguing, linking, collecting and analysing data from pharmacovigilance, modelling, routine healthcare, breastmilk samples through a large network.

The research leading to these results has received support from the EU/EFPIA Innovative Medicines Initiative. IMI2 – Call 13 – Topic 9 (H2020-JTI-IMI2-2017-13-two-stage submitted for H2020-JTI-IMI2-2017-13-two-stage / 06 Sep 2018)
