Grants for academic research in the EU

Subsidies and grants are a great source of non-dilutive funding for researchers in the life sciences and medical technology fields. In the European Union, there are several options to obtain funding for your research.

Funding schemes for academic research

Below we describe the main funding schemes for academic research in the EU. For more information about these and other subsidies, you can consult our subsidies page.

Horizon 2020

A very extensive funding programme from the European Commission, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 is running from 2014 to 2020 with a budget of €70 billion.

There are several types of funding schemes in the Horizon 2020 programme, such as:

  • Research and Innovation Actions (RIA): For basic and applied research, technology development and integration, testing and validation on a small-scale prototype in a laboratory or simulated environment.

  • Innovative Training Networks (ITN): Focuses on training a new generation of creative, entrepreneurial and innovative early stage researchers.

  • European Research Council (ERC): ERC grants support top researchers throughout their career, starting with researchers with 2 to 7 years’ experience after their PhD until established researchers who are leaders in their field of research.

  • Future Emerging Technologies (FET): Future Emerging Technologies programme funds the early stages of joint science and technology research for radically new future technological possibilities.

You can find more information about each of these schemes in our Horizon 2020 page.

Welcome Trust

Support of individuals, teams, resources, seed ideas, places and major initiatives in the following areas:

  • biomedical science
  • population health
  • product development and applied research
  • humanities and social science
  • public engagement and creative industries

Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI)

Aims to speed up the development of better and safer medicines for patients by bringing together key stakeholders in healthcare research including: universities, pharmaceutical and other industries, SMEs, patient organisation and medicines regulators.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants for non-US parties

It’s possible to receive funding from the US NIH if you match the requirements for non-US applicants. The NIH accepts both unsolicited grant applications as well as responses to specific calls. For more information visit our page about NIH grants for non-US parties.

Lost in the middle of all these grants?

Finding the right grant for you and your research can be very challenging. There are hundreds of subsidy options within the funding schemes available, and more than one grant call can apply to your case. Finding the one that best matches your ambitions and plans is key to a successful application.

Fortunately, we’re here to help.

Some client reviews about our services.

StemCell2MAX is a spin-off from Instituto de Medicina Molecular in Lisbon and markets a proprietary mix of neurotrophic factors that are able to stimulate the expansion of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), highly improving their utility in research and potential clinical use.

ttopstart has supported the foundation of StemCell2MAX and is now engaged in supporting its growth through strategy and funding services. We provide their team with a strategic overview of the EU funding opportunities, and support the preparation of their proposals.

“Great support and ability to identify the critical issues and requirements for a competitive application. The team is always available and provides extremely relevant inputs.”
